Marmie Whitney Tarbell, 87, of Sherburne, NY passed away on January 19, 2021 following a brief illness.
She was born on July 31, 1933 to Albert B. Whitney and Dorothy Parsons Whitney. She participated in the first Pageant of Bands and proudly awarded the Albert Whitney Achievement Trophy each year to honor her father as one of the founders of the Pageant of Bands. She attended and graduated from Sherburne schools. She married Claude “Bunny” Tarbell on October 12, 1951 and they enjoyed 58 years together until his passing on April 4, 2010. Marmie cared for her children in their younger years and later went to work for Atwaters as a key punch operator, for TACO in their offices, and for the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District where she was the payroll clerk and the clerk of the Board of Education, retiring after many years of service. Both at home and as a member of the Sherburne Fire Department Auxiliary, she tirelessly supported her husband who was a Charter Member of the Sherburne Emergency Squad and a member of the Sherburne Fire Department. She was an avid walker and could be seen several times a day walking around the streets of the community she grew up in and dearly loved. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching the Yankees, and watching golf on TV.
She is survived by her children, Gayle Ripley of Port Crane; Joanne Tarbell of Sherburne; Gerry and Stacey Tarbell of Volney; Terry Tarbell of Sherburne; Dorothy and Ken Reid of Sherburne. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Wendy and Jim Badia, Tammy and Scott Fisher, Whitney and Bryan McCracken, Janelle and Todd Fowlston, Jason Tarbell, Matthew Tarbell, Andrew Tarbell, Morgan Reid and Ryan Green, Kris Maiurano, Keeley and Rob Fenton, James Maiurano and Lacey Northrup; 14 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her two sisters, Donna Palmiter and Eleanor Ferris; her son, Michael Tarbell on July 7, 2014; her sons-in-law, Kenneth Ripley, Jr. on July 26, 2020 and Jim Maiurano of October 31, 2007. She was also predeceased by four brothers-in-law, and five sisters-in-law.
Services will be private at the convenience of her family. There will be a celebration of her life at a later date when it is safe to gather her beloved family, extended family and friends.
Interment will be in the Episcopal Church cemetery, Sherburne in the spring.
