I used to see Derryl every day at the CVS where I work. I feel like even though there was a decent age gap; we always had something to talk about. And in my year living in the schoolhouse we became good friends. It's sad to see a man who never had anything bad to say about anyone go the way he did. He moved into my old apartment after I left, and was finally on his own again after living with his mom for years. I remember leaving him the table and chairs, along with a 6pack in the fridge. I'm glad he got his bit of freedom before the end... I still hope to see you walk through the door at CVS, ready to talk about your troubles or victories. Rest easy, and fly high my friend. Until we meet again.

Darryl was pretty laid back, kind of unflappable. I remember he went fishing with a friend he had met in New Orleans. As they were walking along the riverbank, a large snake dropped out of a tree and onto Darryl’s head and shoulders. He barely blinked as the thing fell to the ground a slithered away. I would have soiled myself, but Darryl non plussed. No snake was gonna keep him from a day of cold beer and fishing on the river. Once I was dove hunting with Tom Spencer and a few other guys. We were behind blinds on the side of a dirt road. We would call the birds in, and then flush them and shoot. We called Darryl and asked him to grab a case of beer and come to Tom’s house to watch the race. When Darryl drove down the road, his truck flushed the dove’s we had called in, and just as he’s passing us, 3 of us jump out from behind the blinds and started blasting away in the air over the truck. Darryl looked same as always... unmoved. But when we got to the house his back was to me and he was putting beers in the fridge. In a calm even tone he says “You guys scared the living s**t out of me.” He sure didn’t look it though.
My sincerest condolences to the family. We all have many fond memories of Darryl, who, now in God’s good company, I know is enjoying us remembering him
