David B. Simmons, 79, of East Main St, Smyrna, NY, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich after several months of battling leukemia and an underlying heart issue.
He was born May 5, 1940 in Norwich, a son of Francis D. and Ruth Baker Simmons. He was a graduate of Sherburne-Earlville High School, Paul Smith’s College and attended Syracuse University in the forestry program.
On September 15, 1962, David married Pamela MacDowell in Saranac Lake, NY, and they shared a loving union of over 57 years. Initially, David worked in his father’s feed mill, Simmons & Mummery in Smyrna, and then for Stanford Seed Company in Binghamton, McDowell and Walker in Oxford, and Kenyon Press in Sherburne. Following that, he worked for his son Darren doing landscaping and home improvements as Simmons Improvements. David enjoyed carpentry, model trains, and building and flying remote control airplanes. He was known as a handyman who could fix anything.
Surviving are his wife, Pamela; three sons and daughters-in-law, Keven Mark and Melanie Simmons of Sherburne; Darren David and Gwen Simmons of Oneida; Nathan Kyle and Kristine Simmons of Sparta, NJ; six grandchildren, Timothy, Jonathan, Erin, Morgan, Luke and Ella; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Simmons of Minnetonka, MN. He was predeceased by a brother, Dale Simmons.
In keeping with David’s wishes, there are no services.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Smyrna Emergency Squad.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, NY.

David and son Darren have done a lot of work at our house. I will always remember them building the patio in our backyard in October of 2011. It was cold and David built a tent cover over the project to keep them warm. I think his nickname was Mr. Plastic Man from all the covering that he had made while camping up north.
